The Kostolec Gulley (the largest rock overhang), also called the Roof of Slovakia, is approximately 500 meters long canyon stretching near the town of Považská Bystrica in the Strážov Mountains. Manínsky creek has been gradually cutting into a soft limestone cliff for centuries, which created a breakthrough strait lined with remarkable rock walls.

The gulley is known for its interesting rock formations, which create a triangular shape resembling a roof with an entrance opening. It is these geomorphological formations as well as the occurrence of many rare plant species that have been protected and in 1970 the site was declared a nature reserve.

Fans of challenging hiking will probably not be enchanted by the access route, which is too comfortable in Kostolec Gulley. There is an asphalt road for cars and buses or cyclists leading here.

On the contrary, older people or families with small children will appreciate a quality asphalt road winding between rock overhangs which is certainly very conforming and has its charm.

A visit to this canyon is great to combine with a trip to the neighbouring Manínska Gulley, through which you will be guided by educational trail too.
