Andy Warhol - king of pop art, whose roots reach to Slovakia. That is why the Andy Warhol Museum of Modern Art was founded in Medzilaborce in 1991, the first in the world and the only one of its kind in Europe. The unique museum is currently an institution of museum-gallery type, dealing mainly with the current tendencies of contemporary art and especially the life and work of Andy Warhol.

The Andy Warhol Museum is the largest central collection of his works in Slovakia with a unique position and presence in international space. The most valuable pieces exhibited in Medzilaborce include a portfolio of the ten most famous Jews of the 20th century, a series of cans of Campbell soup, and a portfolio of Ladies and Gentlemen.

There are three permanent exhibitions installed in the museum:

  • EXHIBITION ON THE ORIGIN OF ANDY WARHOL - consists of valuable authentic materials, artifacts obtained or lent from surviving and close artists, writings and props that testify to his Ruthenian origin.

  • EXHIBITION OF STREET-ART VS. POP-ART - an exhibition dedicated to the works of art by prominent authors who personally knew Andy Warhol. These include Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Poppy, Bambi and many others.

The museum also includes exhibition spaces designed for short-term exhibitions of contemporary art, where the gallery presents the work of contemporary Slovak and world artists. There is also a long-term exposition of Blanka Jakubčíková consisting of oversized portraits of women who influenced Andy Warhol's life and work. The exposition is available only on request and with the instructor guidance.
